State Controlled Internets. (ACTA)

We laughed when it happened to China. We laughed when it happened to Australia. But a sick sad legislation is heading our way. In the works is the ACTA. ACTA’s official name is “Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement”, but the term “counterfeiting” in this context is a distortion of the word and a misrepresentation of the issues. Although the proposed treaty’s title might suggest that the agreement deals only with counterfeit physical goods (such as medicines), what little information has been made available publicly by negotiating governments about the content of the treaty makes it clear that it will have a far broader scope, and in particular, will deal with new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology”.

This will make it more difficult to distribute free information. Legal restrictions on P2P protocols will make it near impossible to distribute free software, music, and video.

Using free, open source alternatives to popular media players? You are fucked. You will no longer be able to purchase DRM-Free media. DRMed media can not be played on most free media players.

Your devices can be siezed if they are suspected to contain any counterfeit (Pirated) material. That copy of Footloose you downloaded to watch on the plane.

Third Party Liability is placed on the  ISP. This will be handled by denying you your internets all together, permanently, without trial or reason. I do understand Comcact only works half the time anyway.

Change we can believe in indeed.

What can be done you ask?

The only way.
